Do you ever clean the ceilings in your home? While some people may do this regularly, most tend to neglect cleaning their ceilings.

Cleaning a ceiling is very important, not only because of the the dust and cobwebs that can settle on it, but also because mold can grow on it - especially in a humid room.

The first thing to do is to gather up everything you will need to do the cleaning. A duster, microfibre cloths, the vacuum cleaner or broom, sponges and detergent. If we don't want to use a commercial, chemical product, you can make your own detergent.

To do this, mix together 500 ml of warm water, 1 glass of white vinegar and a few drops of dishwashing liquid. Decant into a spray bottle and shake well to mix.

Once you have your detergent, you can begin to clean the ceiling, following the procedure described below:

  • Remove any obvious dirt and grime. Cobwebs and dust build-up can be difficult to spot on the ceiling. So, before washing the ceiling, this loose dirt must be removed. Vacuum the celing with an appropriate attachment, or use a broom;

  • Now on to dusting. Use a duster or a moist cloth to remove any dust that the vacuum cleaner/broom could not dislodge;

  • Once dusted, spray your detegent onto the ceiling, making sure that you do not overdo it and drips form. Allow to act for a few minutes and then rub off to clean the surface thoroughly;

  • To complete the cleaning, wipe down the entire ceiling, using a damp sponge or roller. Make sure to remove any traces of mold;

  • Finish by dabbing dry with a cloth. Remove any water or soap residue and open the windows to allow the ceiling to dry out thoroughly.

This procedure is suitable for all types of ceilings. The most important thing is to ensure you remove any surface dirt before washing the ceiling.

How often should a ceiling be cleaned? There is no exact "rule", and it depends on many factors. If you are a smoker, if you have a fireplace in the home, if you live in a smoggy city - all these variables will determine the frequency. If, on the other hand, your home is not exposed to these pollutants, cleaning your ceilings will not need to be done as frequently.

If your home is exposed to high levels of pollutants, cleaning the ceilings once every two or three months should suffice; in low-pollution areas, once every 4 or 6 months should be fine.

One very useful tip: do ceiling cleaning chores on sunny days when you can leave the windows open to ensure the surfaces dry out quickly and thoroughly. So now, get cracking!
