Doing the laundry is one of most tedious of household chores, and ironing, in particular, can be unpleasant - especially when the weather is hot.

One of the worst things that can happen when ironing is finding that the iron itself has left stains or marks on your clothes. And it's even worse if you've somehow managed to scorch your garments. But before you throw these marred clothes away, you can attempt a few corrective remedies.

For white fabrics, the remedy of choice is hydrogen peroxide, which can easily eliminate stains in just a few simple steps:

  • Moisten the fabric with hot water and scrub the stain with laundry detergent;
  • Pour some hydrogen peroxide into a bowl and immerse the stained fabric into it, leaving it to act for at least 5 minutes;
  • Rinse out and, if the stain is still visible, repeat this operation;
  • Finish by washing the garment in the washing machine.

An alternative way to remove a stain with hydrogen peroxide is as follows;

  • Cover the ironing board with a thick towel, preferably a white one;
  • Place the stained garment on top of the towel;
  • Pour some hydrogen peroxide into a bowl and immerse a sponge or cotton cloth into it. Then, rub this wet sponge over the stain;
  • Pass a hot iron over the garment, checking the condition of the stain as you go;
  • After about 10 minutes, the stain should have vanished;
  • Finish by washing the garment in the washing machine.

Hydrogen peroxide could discolor colored fabrics and so an alternative remedy is required: white vinegar is the answer.

  • Dip a clean, white cloth in white vinegar and wring out so that it is only damp;
  • Press the damp cloth onto the stain to be treated;
  • Repeat this operation, using clean parts of the cloth until the stain disappears completely;
  • Now, use a cloth damped in water only to remove any vinegar residue;
  • Finish by washing the garment in the washing machine.

On synthetic fabrics such as nylon or polyester, the iron can make shiny marks, which can also be eliminated simply: put a damp sheet over the fabric and pass a steam iron over it. The steam and heat should be able to remove the shiny marks.

Wool can also develop shiny marks due to ironing; in this case, the solution is white vinegar, which must be dabbed on the fabric using a cloth, thereafter rinsing off the area by dabbing with a cloth moistened with water.
