Imagine a cold winter evening: it's raining outside and the only thing you really want is to get under a warm blanket, with a hot drink. So, how best to make this warming drink? Well, of course with your trusty electric kettle, which can boil water very quickly

But even the kettle needs cleaning from time to time, no? So, let's find out how best to do this without going overboard:

There is no need to clean the kettle after each use! While you should avoid the kettle from becoming too dirty, this appliance is not used in a way that exposes it to high levels of dirt and grime, as a rule.

Cleaning should be done every two months or even quarterly, depending on how often you use the kettle. If you use the kettle at least two or three times a day, limescale will build up in the kettle's bottom and in the spout, affecting performance. When you notice the kettle "under-performing", it's time to clean it.

You may have noticed that, over time, the bottom of the kettle begins to pick up white marks and stains. This is limescale build-up, and can be easily removed. Just remember not to use any sharp or abrasive objects to remove the limescale, as this could damage the kettle.

To clean the kettle, simply pour a mixture of water and vinegar into it, turn it on, wait for it boil (and turn itself off). Then allow to stand for about 10 or 15 minutes. After this time, empty the kettle and rinse out with clean water.

After this treatment, your kettle will be as good as new. But, as stated earlier, there is no need to do this cleaning more frequently than once every 2 - 4 months.

Having dealt with limescale, how do you avoid the accumulation of mold and unpleasant odors developing in the kettle ? Well, this treatment is simple too - just follow these three steps:

  • Always empty the kettle after use, water from stagnating and encouraging the growth of bacteria and mold.
  • After each use, leave the lid open for a few minutes. This will facilitate quick drying and ongoing cleanliness.
  • Always clean and dry the outsides of the kettle, so that no mineral residue develops on this surface.

If you take these steps every time you use the kettle, it will keep it clean for longer. And now, off you go to enjoy a nice cup of tea (or java)!
