For most people, having a clothes line outside to dry the laundry, is an absolute necessity.

But if you do not have a dryer at home and no room outside for a clothes line, you may be forced to hang your wet laundry up on doors and in windows to dry. This can be very inconvenient and also unsightly.

But did you know you may not have to rush out to buy a clothes horse/drying rack to solve this problem? Check your attic or garage: you're looking for a discarded baby crib!

So, how can you make a DIY clothes horse from an old crib? There are 2 simple ways to do this, detailed below:

If you have an old (intact) crib at home, you can use the wooden framework to make a practical foldable wall-mounted clothes horse:

  • Simply take the sides of the cot and cut them to size for the wall on which you want to mount them on; if you want a specific color, you can paint them using spray paint;
  • Secure these to the wall with hinged brackets at the bottom;
  • Secure the tops with magnets stuck to the wall and the tops of the frames with hot glue;
  • If you choose to fix your clothes to get more air at the top, it will be sufficient to use self-locking hinges; if you instead want the drying rack to be fixed in the lower part, opening it downwards, you can use chains or hang a wooden plank also in the upper part of the wall, with a hook to fix the drying rack when not in use.

If, however, want a ceiling-mounted clothes horse, you can use the crib's bedframe:

  • Clean the bedframe carefully, removing dust and any traces of rust;
  • Paint it however you like using spray paint;
  • When the paint is completely dry, secure the frame to the ceiling with eye screws and chains (which you can paint the same color) or using heavy-duty cable ties and hooks.

Thanks to this simple DIY project, you can hang your clothes horse from the ceiling of the laundry room or the bathroom and use it to hang your up laundry to dry (using hangers).
