Limited space, but still stylish: ideas to make your small apartment appear luxurious
Living in small homes is increasingly the norm these days, especially for those who live in big cities. At the same time, the space we need seems to grow ever-bigger: so, how can we balance these competing needs? We certainly need to get creative, but many space-saving solutions can look "ugly" in our home.
That said, there are ways to satisfy this tension: there are solutions that are both functional and aesthetically pleasing. We detail some of these below, as recommended by interior design experts:
Unique furniture with multiple functions
Multifunctional furniture is amongst the first things that come to mind to when furnishing small spaces. And some solutions are more creative than others. Fashionable at the moment is using stools or poufs instead of having a coffee table in the living room. Why is this? Well, the tops of stools and poufs offer sufficient stability for things like trays and cups and, at the same time, they can be very decorative. When your guests arrive, you'll have the extra seating for them!
Small space, large furniture!
This solution may seem counterintuitive, but sometimes it works... Using a lot of small furniture pieces only underlines how little space there is. However, using just a few large pieces creates the opposite effect. Examples include placing a large armchair in a corner, a large chest of drawers against one wall, or a big sofa. And if you add a large mirror, you can make the room look twice as big!
As you can see, you don't have to sacrifice comfort and pleasing aethetics for functionality!
Artistic walls
For many years now, accent walls have been very popular. These days, however, their appeal has started to wane. But how about a solution in the same vein, but a bit more creative?
Murals, high-quality wallpaper or refined wood paneling/cladding: these are just some of the ways you can accentuate your walls and remain fashionable!
Convert closets and niches
Any niche, closet or recess in the home can accommodate extra storage solutions... But how about turning these nooks into mini-roooms? For example, how about setting up a laundry room or a home office in these spaces!
An entryway worthy of being in a palace
Imagine living in a aristocratic home with a sprawling garden: upon returning home, boots and shoes covered in mud and leaves must be taken off and dripping wet coats must be hung up. To satisfy this need, the so-called "mudrooms" were born, i.e. the spaces at the entrance to the home where outdoor gear can be left before entering the home proper.
Do you have room for a small mudroom at your entryway?
Sliding doors
As shown in this example, there is a closet set into wall of a narrow corridor: a sliding/folding door (similar to a barn door) allows you to use this closet comfortably.
Partitioning
Most small modern apartments do not have many rooms. There are areas, however, that you may want partitioned off (like the bedroom, for example)... This is where room-dividers come into play. A well-made, high-quality room-divider/partition can tastefully separate off various areas in your home.
A creative twist on this partitioning solution is to use large paintings (or other works of art) as hanging room-dividers.
Even the most bland and smallest apartment can look stunning by following this furnishing advice!
