When some people buy a new home, or are about to renovate one, many like to be guided by philosophy that aims at creating emotional well-being and balance through the organization of the living spaces. This philosophy is Chinese Feng Shui, which aims to achieve harmony between the environment and those that live within it.

According to the tenants of Feng Shui, it is important to position objects in a house in a certain way, arrange the furniture to promote a positive flow of energy and, last but not least, to chose the ideal colors for the rooms. And, since visitors and guests should be greeting with "positive vibes" too, it is important that we apply the principles of Feng Shui to our entryways as well.

What do we need to consider about the entryway?

Obviously, the first thing you will notice when entering a house - whether it's your own or you are a visitor - is the entryway. The door is the "guardian" of your home, and as soon as it is opened, you will get an immediate emotional impression. First impressions are important (and lasting), so it is important that the entryway's fixture and fittiings are selected with care: the door itself, the color of the paint on the walls and the furniture used.

And this is where Feng Shui comes in handy. Following this philosophy's guidelines can help us make good choices. For example, you need to consider the direction in which you house (and the entryway) faces. Rules of orientation play a pivotal role in Feng Shui, as will be made clear below:

In Feng Shui, the points of the compass are of fundamental importance and they cannot be ignored when it comes to deploying furniture and choosing (paint) colors. To this end, then, it is critical to determine in which direction the entryway is orientated:

  • North facing: Elements related to water are important for this orientation, which is why the colors chosen should be in grey, black and white tones. Thes are neutral colors that go well with just about everything. Starting with the door, and then moving inside, these use of these hues will give off positive energy.
  • South facing: This is considered the hottest, most passionate and fiery orientation, which is why the most popular colors are red, orange and earthy tones. These colors are symbolic of strength and have apparently have the ability to transform negative vibes into positive ones.
  • East facing: This orientation is linked to nature and wood and favors colors in green and blue shades. Green is considered the bear of novelty and growth, while blue is linked to self-knowledge and greater personal insights.
  • West facing: For this orientation the preference is for metallic colors such as gray and white. Alternatively, colors , or linked to the earth - yellows and browns - will also work well. Shades of gray are symbolic of a thirst for knowledge, making new friend and travelling. Yellows and browns, however, symbolize a strong link to the earth and earthy affairs.

As shown, Feng Shui leaves nothing to chance, not even how we organize our entryways. Everything must be in perfect balance to create a harmonious and fluid atmosphere.

So, now all you have to do is get a compass, make a note of the orientation of your entryway and get to work. Good luck!
