6 easy and creative ways to recycle old sheets you have at home

Amongst the items we continuously use without thought, sheets are a prime example: almost certainly, you will not remember when you bought the set of sheets you are currently using. All you may remember is that you've had the set "for a long time". And, of course, with the passage of time, sheets become stained, threadbare, faded and may even get torn. Or, you may simply get bored with them and/or they fall out of fashion. So, what can we do with old sheets?

If the sheets cannot be donated to a charity, you could consider recycling them into something equally useful. Some good recycling ideas are listed below:

Anyone with basic sewing skills can recycle old sheets. And even if there are areas that are damaged, these can easily be hidden. One idea is to make a cover from an old sheet - which can then be used to cover up/hide a piece of furniture that we no longer want to look at.

An old top sheet - the one without elasticated corners - is still a sheet! So why not continue to use it as such? By sewing a hem along the sides, the sheet can easily be turned into an alternative for a picnic blanket!

Similarly, and especially if you like the print on the sheet, you can make a thin, light beach towel out of it and which won't pick up the sand!

Pillowcases

Typically pillowcases get dirty before the rest of the bed linen, but we end up washing the full set anyway to keep things "synchronized". But how about making extra pillowcases using an old sheet? And this could be done to make extra cushion covers too!

Curtains

Curtains should also be changed relatively frequently, and especially when the season change: in winter, heavier curtains provide better insulation, and in summer, lighter curtains filter out the sunlight but don't prevent good ventilation. Old sheets (that aren't ripped) are perfect for turning into curtains for the summer!

Tablecloths

White or neutral-colored sheets that are still in decent condition are perfect for turning into tablecloths! Combine your homemade tablecloth with a runner, and you will always be able to dress up the dining table when needed.

Finally, old sheets can be torn up into cleaning rags, or serve as protective sheeting when you undertake a painting project. Alternatively, they can be be used as "emergency" protective covers for sofas, armchairs or car seats which pets may jump up on. We say "emergency" because it is usually better to get proper covers for this purpose...(unless you have the skills to sew perfectly-fitting covers, of course)!

As you can see, then, it's well worth holding onto your old sheets!
