There are certain items you can place in the washing machine's drum while loading your laundry to help trap the hair and that will move between the fabrics during the wash:

  • A soft sponge: Avoid using sponges with an abrasive side for dishes, as it might harm your clothes, especially if they are delicate or made of wool. Simply place one or two sponges in the drum along with your clothes, and after the wash, you'll find them covered in hair. The downside is that it's tough to get the hair off them, but you can reuse them without the risk of shedding in the next wash.
  • Used dryer softener sheets: After these sheets have been through the dryer once or twice, they no longer contain the product but still have a texture which will trap hair and lint. Place two or three of them in the washing machine along with your load.

Specialized accessories: Online, you can find laundry accessories like rough nylon balls or synthetic spongy materials designed to capture hair during the wash. Similar to dryer sheets, color-catching sheets can be used as well, even if they are already used. Some use wet-wipes, but there's a risk of these unravelling during the wash (especially if they are the cheap versions).

Useful habits to follow to prevent too much hair from ending up in the washing machine

When dealing with blankets and sheets, more effort is required, especially compared to clothes. It's useful to shake or beat them vigorously first before washing them. Using brushes to remove hair and lint is even better. This also makes it easier for hairs to come out of the fabrics once they are in the washing machine.

Adhesive rollers - whether with peel-off sheets or covered in a slightly sticky rubber - are quite helpful too.

When placing items on beds and sofas, always opt for bedspreads made from fabrics less likely to trap hair. These materials include: chiffon, silk and satin, microfiber, suede, leather, linen, and denim, as well as tightly woven fabrics.

Additionally, remember to regularly clean the filters and seals of the washing machine as hair and lint can accumulate in these spots!
