Made from natural wool, or more frequently from synthetic polyester fibres, fleece is a warm, soft, comfortable and water-resistant material and is our best ally against the cold of winter. Widely used for sweaters, tracksuits, jackets and blankets, fleece is widely appreciated by athletes and hikers and is a perfect fabric for sporting activities and around the house. And for this reason, it is important to take care of fleece garments properly.

Fleece garments are generally quite durable, however they can easily stain or produce pilling, as well as losing their softness; this is why it is necessary to ensure we wash them correctly so that they remain soft and clean.

So, how does one wash and take care of our fleece garments correctly? Let's find out together in the article below:

Fleece is generally suitable for washing both by hand and in the washing machine, but it is always best to first read the washing instructions on the label.

If you decide to wash your garment by hand, cold water and a mild detergent will be sufficient; leave to soak for 15-20 minutes before rinsing thoroughly with cold water and drying.

If you prefer machine washing, wash the fleece separately from other garments and turn inside out to avoid the formation of pilling.  Set a cold or low-temperature program, as heat stiffens the fibers. Use a delicate detergent and do not use bleach or chemical softeners which will damage the fibres. To eliminate any unpleasant odors, you can put a spoonful of baking soda in the drum before loading the washing.

The care for fleece garments does not end with the washing:

  • If possible, air-dry fleece garments outdoors on a sunny day (but place them in the shade to prevent the light and heat from fading their colors). If possible, avoid using the dryer;
  • To remove stains from fleece, use enzymatic stain removers or simple Marseille soap, rubbing the surface to be treated and leaving it to act for at least 10 minutes before rinsing;
  • The frequency of washing depends on how you use the garments: fabrics in contact with the skin must be washed at least 2 times a week; for jackets that are worn over other clothes, washing once a week will be sufficient. Finally, blankets must be washed once a week if you use them daily, less frequently if you use them less often;
  • Avoid putting fleece garments on hangers to prevent wrinkles from forming or the fabric from deforming.

All you need to do now is enjoy your fleece jackets and blankets!
