Amongst the household chores that we can never escape for too long is doing the laundry. And this chore requires patience and some planning. In fact, depending on the type of garments and fabrics to be washed, we often have to do separate loads. And, of course, we all want our laundry to come out clean, smelling fresh and needing the minimum of ironing.

So, what can we do when the laundry comes out feeling rough, hard and very creased? Well, try the following tips:

First of all, there are some precautions to take...

Amongst these, it is important not to overdo the spin cycles, which is the main cause of creased clothes; then, you should pay attention to not use too much softener, which accumulates between the fibers and has the opposite effect; additionally, you should never load the drum beyond 80% of its capacity, because otherwise the water cannot flow between the garments and it will lead to excessive creasing. It is also best to avoid using excessively high temperatures unless strictly necessary.

Following these "rules", one can also add an ingredient that we all usually have in the kitchen: salt.

But to clarify: we often read that salt is capable of sanitizing as well as washing, but this is only true to a certain point. In fact, salt does kill some bacteria (but not all), and it will not remove dirt from garments, especially when it comes to grease/oil stains. To obtain the double result of cleaning and hygiene, you need to use detergents as well. Salt, therefore, can be considered a very useful additive, but not a substitute for regular detergent.

So, how can we exploit salt's properties? There are various ways:

  • Pouring it directly into the drum: 3 tablespoons will be enough;
  • By dissolving it in hot water (about a glass of water for 3 tablespoons of salt). Then let this cool off and, if you want, add 3 drops of an essential oil. At this point, you can pour the mixture directly into the drum or the dispenser tray.

Start a wash cycle (the recommended average temperature is 40°C for most non-delicate clothes), and that's it!
