How many times have you got into the shower but immediately detected an unpleasant smell of sewage emanating from the drain?

What causes this unpleasant smell? In fact, there are several causes, mainly related to the clogging of drains, the formation of mold and  the accumulation of soap residue, hair and dead skin cells. When you detect this sewage smell in your shower cubicle, it's time to take action.

Here, we show you how to do this using a simple plastic bottle.

First of all, get an empty plastic bottle, which you can fill with one of these mixtures:

  • vinegar and lemon: there has recently been a heated debate on the use of vinegar in drains, because it appears to be a pollutant; we also advise against using it in marble-clad showers, because it could damage the surfaces; however, this mixture can be used effectively in an emergency. Mix 400 ml of white vinegar with the juice of a lemon in a bottle and pour this down the drain. Let the mixture work for a few hours before running the water again. This method will not only get rid of the bad smell, but will also leave behind the pleasant scent of lemon.
  • citric acid: a remedy that is certainly more popular is to use citric acid - a natural remedy when you need to clean, degrease and sanitize surfaces. Fill a bottle with 1 liter of distilled water in which you will dissolve 150 g of citric acid. When all the powder has completely dissolved, empty the bottle down the drain and leave it to act for a few minutes, before pouring in a pot of boiling water.
  • baking soda: another very useful remedy, especially when the drain is clogged, is baking soda (known for its deodorizing properties). Pour 250 g down the drain of your shower before proceeding with one of the two remedies indicated above. Let it act for a few minutes and then pour in boiling water. The drain will be clear and the bad smells will be gone.
