White is the favorite color for the interiors of the vast majority of houses in the world, but sometimes, the whiteness tends to get yellow-ish. When this happens, the interior risks becoming drab and dour.

That said, there is no need to repaint everything again: while this may become necessary in the future, just washing the walls can return them to their original (or near-original) whiteness.

Of course, we need to pay attention to the type of paint used on the wall: some are more glossy, others are more opaque and porous. Some can withstand more aggressive detergents, while others can be damaged easily. In addition to specific commercial detergents, however, home remedies can also be used. Although the ones we propose below tend to be safe on a large number of surfaces, it is always best to do a test cleaning on a hidden area first.

From the pantry, we can make use of three main ingredients that are great for DIY cleaning:

  • Baking soda: take a bucket or bowl, fill it with warm water and dissolve two or three tablespoons of baking soda into it. Dip a sponge or microfibre cloths into the mix and wipe them over the walls. Use soft cloths to dry the surfaces quickly, if you are in a rush. Baking soda can also be used in a more concentrated form on some specific stains: create a soft paste by mixing it with water and rub it on the stains. Remember that this is an abrasive paste, so pay attention to doing any damage;
  • Spirit or white wine vinegar: this should be diluted with water, one part vinegar to two parts water. You can use this solution both in a bowl as above, or, using a spray bottle, by spraying it on the wall and immediately wiping off with a cloth. Rinse off and dry immediately afterwards. And if you want to make the vinegar smell disappear quickly, ventilate the room;
  • Hydrogen peroxide and bicarbonate: for every liter of water used, pour 3 tablespoons of hydrogen peroxide and 3 of sodium bicarbonate, and use with a basin and a sponge or soft cloth.

You can perfume the solutions by adding 3-5 drops of an essential oil of your choice.

And if the any marks or scuffs remain after washing, you can use a magic eraser to deal with these!

Are you ready to make your white walls gleam again?
