Summer heat arrived? Prepare yourself with a deep clean of your air conditioners

Indispensable allies in the fight against the summer heat, air conditioners (air-con) actually come in handy all year round, especially if they have a dehumidification function. This means that they end up being used for quite a few months in the year. And during use (or even when switched off), dust and dirt can accumulate in and on them.

If you don't clean the various components of air-con units, when you turn them back on, you risk breathing in this dirt and dust (in particulate form, of course). So, how to best clean air-con units? Below, you will find some useful information:

Start by unplugging the units and work on cleaning the internal filters. First, remove the bulk of the dust with a dry cloth, and then you can proceed with washing. In this case, you can simply use water and liquid soap, such as Marseille soap or dish washing soap. Rinse and dry off with soft cloths, so as not to leave any residue. For an ideal finish, you can use sanitizing products on the exposed parts: we are talking here about detergents with sanitizing components like hydrogen peroxide or ethyl alcohol.

Considering that the dry-cleaning phase (ie. when you dust the units initially) can end up dirtying the rest of the room, it is always best to cover the surrounding areas with an old sheet or towel that will collect the bulk of the dirt. Even better, you can clean the filters in the garden or on a balcony.

Always remember not to reassemble the fliter pieces until they are perfectly dry, to avoid damage and electrical shocks when switching on the appliance.

One part that can be washed more often and in a decidedly easier way (just having a stool or even equipping yourself with long sticks) are the ventilation grilles, which can be cleaned a bit like with adjustable shutters, and as for the suitable product , here too you can use hydrogen peroxide or even 75% ethyl alcohol. For a quick cleaning you can also simply use water and dish soap.

It's worth doing this cleaning a couple of times a year, before and after the peak season, to make sure you have sanitized the appliances and also prevent mold from forming over time.
