The limescale and dirt that accumulate inside a washing machine can, in the long run, interfere with the proper functioning of the appliance. Not to mention the bad smells that can also be produced by this. There are, of course, good limescale removers and chemical disinfectant products capable of preventing or solving the problem.

But it is also possible to remedy this problem by making periodic use of some natural products which, if introduced into an empty drum set on high temperature, can guarantee the elimination of mold, bacteria, limescale and bad odours.

Read on to find out more about this remedy:

Of all the products that we list below, just use a glassfull and place it directly into the washing machine's drum. The ingredients are commonly used for many home-cleaning chores and are all eco-friendly.

  • Bicarbonate: bicarb is among the most commonly used natural substances for home hygiene and more. It is therefore not surprising that it is also one of the products capable of sanitizing the inside of the washing machine. Toss a glass of bicarb into the drum and do an empty wash at a fairly high temperature. In addition to cleaning, the baking soda should also help neutralize odors.
  • Citric acid: the same can be said for citric acid. Used less frequently than bicarb, citric acid is equally effective. Again, put one glassfull into the drum and set a hot, empty wash cycle. You can add a few drops of essential oil to provide a pleasant scent.
  • White vinegar: vinegar is another magical ingredient, widely used for many household chores. It's really good at sanitizing and dissolving limescale. Proceed as in the above methods.
  • Lemon: lemons are yet another classic natural product, useful for cleaning and perfuming many things in the home. In this case, you need a glassfull of lemon juice. However, we advise you to filter it thoroughly before pouring it into the drum (to remove pulp fragments and pips).

For the remedies mentioned above to be completely effective, they should be used in the washing machine at least once a month. Now, you just have to give this a try.
