Have you ever noticed how, in a neat and clean room, just looking out the window on a nice day and noticing that the windows are dirty can mar the experience? And conversely, if the windows are clean, the whole room automatically looks fresher and tidier. And what about the window fixtures? The window frames fill up with dust and dirt that can make our homes look neglected.

When we realize that the time has come to clean the windows thoroughly, we get ready for a tough job. But the good news is that a single cleaning ingredient could be enough for the task. We're talking about "grandma's yellow soap".

You probably already know about this soap: it's a soft potassium soap, which has a yellowish color, can be shaped with your hands easily. There are formulations of various kinds, but the classic one is in block form and can be cut into smaller portions.

We advise you cut the block into "single portions" as soon as you buy it: just cut it into cubes, using a knife (perhaps even heating the blade) or with dental floss. Then shape each cube with your hands into a ball. In this way, it will be much easier to keep all the single doses in a jar or container with a lid on (airtight container, like those you use food).

  • The glass - Fill a large bowl with very hot water (be careful if is was boiling) and dissolve a ball of the yellow soap in it. Then, dip a soft cloth (suitable for cleaning windows) into the solution, wring out well and rub on the dirt stains that are on the windows (especially after it has rained or when you notice tracks left by insects and other creatures). Without using too much of the solution, you will be able to dissolve away the dirt easily. Then you only need to rinse and dry off immediately using a soft cloth. Your glass will be sparkling afterwards.
  • Fixtures (frames) - Here you can follow the same procedure, possibly also slightly increasing the dosage of soap used. Alternatively, you can moisten a cloth in hot water and then spread a small amount of soap directly onto it, then rub it over the framework. Once this is done, your frames should be clean.
  • Shutters - Yes, this multifunctional soap can also help you clean the shutters and blinds - even wooden ones. You just need a microfiber cloth and more soap and water solution. You will be stunned by the results!
