We all know that fashion and trends are cyclical: every few years, we see the return of some style from the past - from clothes to home furnishings and a thousand other things. Of course, these "blasts from the past" get updated a bit from their original form and format, but, essentially, they remain faithful to their former selves.

This return to the past includes interior design trends, and current backwards-looking trends can be seen in contemporary fashion magazines and online. Let's check out some of these trends that have resurfaced recently:

Brass

Taps, handles and knobs: brass is less ostentatious than gold and warmer than stainless steel and gives a vintage touch to any bathroom or kitchenit is used in. And it can be used in modern homes!

Freestanding bathtub

Once upon a time, bathtubs - from the humblest to the most sumptuous - were freestanding, i.e. not integrated into the architecture of the bathroom. Freestanding tubs - ranging from those in wood and metal to those decorated with all sorts of precious materials in the homes of the noblity - were standard. Only much later did built-in tubs become the standard.

Recently, however, freestanding tubs have become the vogue, but with ultra-modern design features and fittings.

Wallpaper

Using wallpaper is making a come-back in recent times. Once believed to weigh down a room, depriving it of light, wallpapering is gaining in popularity again. The English and French floral motifs are, apparently, are a sign of great elegance.

Wood paneling on the walls

Seeing wooden wall panels, one immediately thinks the past. Using wood wall paneling is also making a come-back recently: full wall or half wall cladding is all the rage. The colors, finishes and sizes used can transform any room in a thousand ways.

Closable kitchen cabinets

If open shelving has an indisputable appeal, they also oblige us to keep everything in neat and dust-free. For this reason, reverting to using classic wall units - with closing doors - are becoming popular again.

Bright colors in the kitchen

The predominance of beige, light grays and neutral colors in the kitchen remains the norm, but it is no longer rare to come across kitchens that are decked out in stunningly bright colors!

Maximalism

The minimalist style has dominated design plans for years now: every room in the house was reduced to its bare essentials, with sharp lines and few objects on display. Now, many are embracing the exact opposite approach, using explosions of colour, a variety of materials and eye-catching combinations.

Light wood

Very light wooden floors and furniture: this too has become a widespread trend since the spread of the Nordic style, and continues to be very popular.

Abundance of plants

We are referring to an "urban jungle": the decking out of domestic with luxuriant nature, hanging plants and bushy shrubs. An abundance of plants is no longer seen as "messy", and is strongly recommended for the well-being of all the residents!

Rattan furniture

Furniture made from wicker, rattan and/or bamboo fell out of favor many years ago. For the most part, furniture made of these materials were confined to outdoor corners. Now, however, this style of furniture is starting to return and can be found in many modern homes!

Have you embraced any of these trends in your home?
