There are some cleaning chores that don't need be done too often - but when the time comes, they must be done with care and patience. One of this is cleaning the mattress: unless some exceptional event occurs which calls for it, it is generally advisable to clean the mattress only a couple of times a year. And on these occasions it is easy to discover stains due to our bodily fluids - above all sweat - which are not pleasant to look at and are not very hygienic.

Again, stains of different origins can appear at any time, and for these it is good to act as quickly as possible - but how? Read on to find out the recommended remedies depending on the type of stain to be treated.

Whenever you start cleaning your mattress - whether it's to do it thoroughly or just to deodorize it - the first, essential step is to use a vacuum cleaner to remove all the loose dirt from the surface. And if the vacuum you have at home is also equipped with accessories to extract dirt from upholstery, then use it on the whole mattress, including the sides.

As for the possible remedies for cleaning stains, here are the most useful ones:

  • Hydrogen peroxide, liquid dish soap (or liquid Marseille soap) and baking soda: fill a small spray bottle with hydrogen peroxide, then add a teaspoon of liquid soap and a spoonful of baking soda, mix well, shake and spray on the area to be treated, leaving it to act for about ten minutes. Spray on a little more and dab, rubbing gently with a soft cloth until the stain is gone.
  • In the case of bad-smelling stains, natural enzymatic stain removers can also be used, such as those sold for stains made by dogs and cats.
  • Lemon juice and salt: create a paste in a small bowl, and apply it to the stain with a sponge, then leave it to act for at least half an hour. Then use a clean towel or microfiber cloth to wipe everything off.

In particular, and depending on the type of stain:

  • In the case of blood stains, it is advisable to use hydrogen peroxide. Alternatively, gentle bleach (oxygenated, non-chlorine) is also a great alternative. The enzymatic stain removers mentioned earlier are also suitable for this type of stain.
  • For sweat or urine stains: any of the three methods above are fine.
  • In the case of coffee, tea or milk stains: when an accident occurs with breakfast in bed, it is best to act quickly with a paste made of bicarbonate, water and salt.

Some other useful tips:

  • If the mattress is an older model (i.e. not latex or memory foam), when it comes time to clean it, expose it to the sun for a few hours after cleaning properly.
  • Invest in good mattress protectors which will ensure your mattress remains well protected.

Great work!
