IKEA hacks: creating a stunning privacy screen

You know that empty space in your bedroom, between the wardrobe and the wall, that we usually just fill with a chair or where we toss our clothes? Have you ever thought of making it look more graceful by decorating it? For example, a small dressing room could be created by using a privacy screen, aka a pingfeng.

Many different models of pingfengs are available, but they can be very expensive. In reality, it is very simple to make one using low-cost IKEA items from one of their bookcase models. Let's find out how to do this together:

TikTokker @shaynaalnwick shares many interesting DIY home decor videos on her channel. In one of these, she shows us how to create a wonderful pingfeng for our bedroom or our walk-in closets, using the lateral uprights for the shelving from the IKEA IVAR furniture/bookcase model. The material needed to make this simple piece of furniture is as follows:

  • 3 IVAR side uprights
  • wood paint
  • hinges
  • Jute, linen or cotton sheeting of your choice, 30x150 cm
  • 30cm long bamboo sticks

Now let's see how to make the screen:

To make the pingfeng screen requires only a few simple steps: just paint the uprights a color you like (and that suits its' location). Chose a neutral color if you want to use it in multiple locations. Once dry, join them up using the hinges and then secure the sheeting to the frame with a staple gun (after carefully ironing it first). You can add hook-equivalents for your jewelery or belts using the bamboo sticks - to be inserted directly into the holes which are already pre-drilled in the uprights. Your pingfeng will now be ready to screen you when you change clothes, for example. This project can also be adapted for other purposes, such as to serve as room partitions. The only limit to their use is your creativity.
