Most of us have used an old cup/mug as a pen/pencil holder. A metal canister can become a desk organizer or can be used in the kitchen to keep cooking utensils, for example. But using a milk carton for these purposes - especially if decorated to look like an animal - will not occur to many.

With a little imagination, however, milk cartons (or similar) that we usually throw away can be turned into very nice, colorful, useful accessories. Check out the ideas below:

With some paint, brushes, felt-tip pens and a lot of imagination, small half-litre milk cartons become stylized animals (like a panda or a fox, for example). They're cute and colorful to look at, and they will cheer up a shelf on a bookcase, for example. But you could also consider filling them with sand and making paperweights or bookends out of them.

A taller, one liter milk carton, can be cut out and turned into the body of a cute penguin. You will also need some stick-on googly eyes and cotton balls. A perfect project to do with the kids.

Sometimes it's sufficient just to draw a smiling face on a milk carton to make it look cute. But if you go on to make unicorns, the milk cartons turn into something truly magical.

Milk cartons often have a plastic lid: this can become the nose of a super-cute, little pig. All you need is adhesive googly eyes, pipe cleaners and plenty of pink paint.

Milk and juice cartons are designed to contain liquids, so turning them into plant pots is a logical link to make. These will be perfect for small, slow-growing plants (like certain succulents), or those propagated by seed or cuttings that you want to keep a close eye on.

Not just milk cartons: often, milk is contained in plastic bottles, and even these can be transformed into cut animals, such as these colorful elephants.
