Among the properties of salt - which are many - a very important one is that of being effective against limescale. Its abrasive and descaling properties make salt very useful for many types of household cleaning.

When cleaning the toilet, for example, it can help considerably to reduce, prevent or eliminate limescale build-up and, with the help of a little tip, salt can also be used to deodorize. A further useful properly of salt is in fact that it easily absorbs liquid and humidity. Given this, salt is able to blend perfectly with essential oils, releasing the fragrance into the air.

You can easily make scented salt to use on the toilet. To make an amount that can be used a couple of times you need:

  • 500 grams of coarse/rock salt
  • 500 grams of baking soda (bicarb)
  • 40 drops of one or more essential oils that you like

To make the preparation, combine all the ingredients in a bowl and mix them together well. Once the powders have absorbed the essential oils, the mixture can be used immediately or stored in an airtight container. Regarding the choice of perfumed oil, you can do this according to your personal taste or by exploiting the different benefits found in the different types of oil, according to your needs. For domestic environments, for example, lavender is often selected because it has a relaxing power that can always help at home. In the case of the bathroom, another oil that could prove to be excellent is tea tree oil, which has antibacterial properties. And the various oils can also be mixed to enhance their effectiveness. The important thing is not to exceed the recommended dose, as all essential oils, being very concentrated, could prove toxic when used in excess.

To use the mixture, take half of the amount you have prepared and put it into the toilet bowl, preferably in the evening. Leave this overnight. The combined action of the salt and the bicarbonate will help dissolve limescale deposits and eliminate any bacterial growth, while the fragrance of the essential oils will spread, giving the toilet bowl and the whole bathroom a pleasant scent. In the morning, pour a pot of boiling water into the bowl, leave it to act for another five to ten minutes and then flush the toilet. The results will amaze you!
