Microfibre upholstered sofas are amongst the most popular in living rooms around the world: a comfortable, warm cover with a more affordable price than many other models. Furthermore, their fabric allows you to customize the look of a room much easier, since  microfiber upholstery comes in many colors and different patterns.

However, the problem is that, compared to leather or eco-leather for example, stains and dirt are much more visible on microfibre upholstery. So, how can this be remedied? You can use a few methods like the ones given below:

Before starting to wash any sofa, remember that it is essential to vacuum if first. Then you can choose from the remedies listed below, but be careful: always check the manufacturers' instructions first to find out if you can use alcohol-based products or soaps.

  • With dishwashing soap: prepare two basins or buckets with at least a liter of hot water in each. Add 60ml of washing up liquid to one, and using a soft bristle brush or sponge, scrub the soapy water onto the surface to be cleaned. Work from top to bottom, rinsing the brush or sponge often.
  • Using a soft cloth and clean water, rinse by patting dry. Let the material air dry and vacuum again to finish the job.
  • With isopropyl alcohol: In a spray bottle, dilute one-third isopropyl alcohol to two-thirds water, shake, and spray. Use a sponge to rub the material clean - the dirt will be dissolved by the alcohol. Then, pass over with a wet cloth (always well wrung out) to rinse off. Air dry and vacuum again.

Other remedies to try - always after checking that they do not contain ingredients which will damage the upholstery - are:

  • Wet wipes (mainly used for children): dab directly on the area to be cleaned, rubbing lightly. Then leave to air dry.
  • Aerosol glass cleaners - which usually contain alcohol - are a favorite alternative for many, and are used just like isopropyl alcohol (described above).

Always try not to use too much water, and also dilute the cleaning products well so that they don't leave any residue. What is your preferred cleaning method?
