The problem of humidity in the home is a common issue in many homes, even when they are not located in cold regions or where the weather and environmental conditions would seem to prevent it. And it's not a problem limited to old structures. In fact, there are many factors that can contribute to the presence of humidity in the home. Often, this is caused by leaving the bathroom door open or hanging up wet laundry inside, for example.

So, how can we combat excessive humidity build-up (which could also have a harmful impact on our health)? There are lots of DIY tips you can try, and one is the plastic bottle method. Read on to find out more:

This basic remedy uses a simple plastic bottle and coarse salt (rock salt). The latter, in fact, is highly hygroscopic, therefore it is able to absorb humidity very effectively.

All you need is:

  • A plastic bottle;
  • A craft knife or scissors;
  • Some coarse kitchen salt;
  • A little cotton wool.

The procedure is as follows:

  • Cut the bottle to separate the neck from the rest of the body: you will need to make the cut just above the middle of the bottle (it also depends on the shape of the bottle): it is important that the bottom is cut at the widest point.
  • Remove the lid from the top side and insert a little cotton wool into the mouth;
  • Turn this part upside down, so that the mouth points downwards, and insert it into the main body of the bottle.
  • Now fill the funnel-shaped top that you have made with coarse salt: about three fingers worth will be needed.

Place the bottle in a corner of a humid room, and leave it there. The salt will absorb the water in the air, and after a while, you will notice that the salt will decrease in volume as it is dissolved by the water (that will drip through to the bottom of the bottle).

If you don't want to use cotton wool, you can also leave the plastic cap on the bottle, but you'll have to make holes in it so that the water can then flow through.

You could also try using baking soda instead of salt. And if you also want to have a pleasant scent, add a few drops of tea tree, lavender or eucalyptus essential oil to the salt.

The important thing is to check the salt and water levels regularly, emptying the bottle when the salt is almost gone and repeating the operation.

It's a really simple and cheap method to combat humidity!
