Although we are all perfectly aware of the health risks that smoking tobacco products entails, it remains a habit rooted in the lives of many people. Some try not to smoke at home, but it's not always easy for smokers to do this. As a result, the homes of habitual smokers always smell of stale cigarette or cigar smoke.

This smell manages to permeate and penetrate clothes, upholstery, furniture, walls... In short, it spreads almost everywhere, and we need to act to eliminate it. In addition to ventilating the rooms out well, there are a series of remedies can be used, such as the ones we suggest below:

For carpets and upholstery - as well as the mattress in the bedroom - an effective ally is baking soda. Whenever you smell smoke, take a packet of bicarbonate and pour it on the affected surfaces abundantly and evenly. Leave it to act with the fabric for at least half an hour, and then remove it with a vacuum cleaner. You can use coffee grounds in a similar way, provided they have been completely dried beforehand.

You can also take an extra step first: pour the baking soda into a bowl, add some drops of essential oil and mix with a spoon. Then, perhaps with the help of a sieve, sprinkle the scented bicarbonate as indicated above, and proceed in the same way. The amount of essential oil depends on how much bicarbonate you use - but be aware that even a very few drops can still give off an intense perfume.

Vegetable charcoal: in some shops, you can buy bamboo charcoal (which is also used to purify water). It is often in solid form (blocks of various sizes), but sometimes it is powdered, and sold in bags to hang up where needed in the home.

The charcoal absorbs odors and can be used in drawers and cupboards, in the car, inside ashtrays and so on. Charcoal that is used for the a regualr barbecue is also very effective.

White vinegar: if you need to prepare liquid products to spray on fabrics - or maybe even a deodoriser - you can mix white vinegar with water (preferably distilled), in ratio 1/4 vinegar and 3/4 water . In the same way, pure low-quality vodka can be used and is odor-neutral.
