Greasy walls behind the stove: an easy way to clean them thoroughly

Spending time in the kitchen always means having to clean up after cooking. Work surfaces, utensils and the stove get dirty after every use. However, we don't always have the time or inclination to clean the walls behind the oven. Despite often being forgotten, the wall immediately above and behind the oven should never be forgotten and should be regularly cleaned.

Usually, the dirt we find in this location is greasy and grimy, and is impossible to remove with a simple wipe-down with a soapy sponge. It is necessary to use a degreasing product, as shown in a TikTok video.

The dirt and grime that we see in the video from @nowitsclean is something that we will have seen in our own homes. Let's see how this TikTokker deals with this:

The woman is equipped with:

  • an electric toothbrush to clean between any joints and the difficult corners of the floor. This can be replaced with a an old, manual toothbrush with hard bristles;
  • a sponge with an abrasive side;
  • dish soap;
  • an abrasive cleaning paste (the brand used in the video is "The Pink Stuff" (but you can also create an equivalent by making a paste from cornstarch with water and a few pinches of baking soda);
  • a degreasing liquid detergent (to be chosen also according to the type of material with which the wall is clad);
  • a microfiber cloth.

How to proceed:

  • If possible, move any appliances away from the area to be cleaned;
  • Sweep the floor thoroughly;
  • Use a bowl filled with hot water and a sponge with dishwashing liquid to remove the bulk of the dirt. Alternatively, you can also dilute a little dish soap into a bottle of warm water. If you want to start from the ground level - as in the video - use a brush to clean the baseboard;
  • Now you will see the areas which need special attention: use the abrasive paste for these areas, spreading it with the help of a clean cloth and scrubbing thorougly;
  • Rinse and remove any residual soap and dirt with a damp cloth;
  • Do a final pass using the degreasing product, rinse off and dry with a new, clean cloth.

Now you only have to put the appliances back in their place, and you can be happy and satisfied that you have cleaned one of the most neglected areas of the kitchen.
