The kitchen is one of the busiest areas in the house, especially for those who love spending their time cooking. The more you cook, the more you surround yourself with a bunch of accessories and utensils to use for the various dishes, and often we have some favorite items always at hand. As a result, we continue to use these favoured objects for as long as possible, or until they break.

From the point of view of the fight against waste, this is always a commendable act, but there are cases in which it can be counterproductive in terms of hygiene. And worn-out utensils can make the kitchen look a bit scruffy. Check out the advice below:

Cutting boards: it's true that it's a shame to throw away something that can actually still be used, but in the case of cutting boards - when they're heavily marked by cuts and scratches - it's time to say goodbye. This is because it becomes practically impossible to wash and sanitize them properly, even if you use the right cleaning products. Furthermore, those made of wood (or silicone) should never be used with anything other than vegetables and fruit, while those made of metal are recommended for cutting up meat, fish and cheese.

When the non-stick coating becomes scratched or - worse still - starts peeling off, pots and pans need to be replaced as they will be harmful to our health. In the case of cast iron pots and pans, it is often possible to rejuvenate the protective layers. However, one must always be very careful to do this properly, to avoid health problems later.

A similar argument can be made for ladles, spatulas and kitchen spoons. Traditionally, wooden utensils were popular, but it is now known that wood fibers are not easy to keep clean, especially if you use the same ladle for all the dishes. Synthetic materials such as silicone and Teflon are considered safer. When these utensils wear out, it's best to replace them.

Enamelled metal mugs: these drinking vessels have a timeless vintage charm, and every now and then, they come back into fashion. But when the enamel chips, problems begin. If the chipping is only on the outside, they can look shabby. But when the chipping is on the inside, you need to repair them so food particles do not get into metal. There are also repair kits you can use, but always be sure to use paints and materials that are suitable for food use.

Knife blocks: if you use a lot of kitchen knives, you need a knife block to keep them in order. But it is also true that knife blocks get dirty easily and are difficult to clean. In the slits where the blades are inserted dust, crumbs, and dirt will accumulate and mold will develop. It's much better to opt for more modern solutions, such as magnetic strips and other similar models.

What other details, in your opinion, can make a kitchen look shabby?
