Have you ever thought of decorating the garden with flower boxes / beds made of stones or rocks? The time has come to try this out. You can create wonderful flower boxes, to suit all tastes and all budgets. And you can use several techniques.

The most popular method is one which involves the use of so-called gabions (cages) - metal structures which come in various forms and sizes. They are easy to find in any gardening and DIY store, and also quite inexpensive when it comes to those of small or medium size. As an alternative to gabions, it is possible to bind the stones together with special glue or cement to create the desired shape or to clad / convert vases, pots and other structures you may have already made.

Below, you can view some unique ideas you can copy or use as inspiration to create some other great stuff.

The stone spirals made with gabions and filled with colorful flowers are certainly amongst the popular models made by those who chose to use planters of this type.

To the classic cylindrical gabions, you can choose to add a touch of originality through inserting side openings in which different plants can grow.

And what do you think of small, ball-shaped gabions filled with colorful stones and flowers?

Another very popular structure is one in cube form. Inside a large one, you can considr of planting many species of plants, creating "a garden within a garden".

But the gabion can also be a small cube. With multiple small cubes, you can have many colorful and lovely plants which are useful for decorating gardens or, if desired, on balconies and verandas.

The classic flower bed gabions in the shape of a low wall - which are useful for dividing or fencing off some area - lend themselves to becoming very special flower beds, full of color.

By covering existing pots or other structures with stones, you can create almost any shape. One example is of baskets full of flowers, which is an original and particularly attractive idea.

A half-sphere-shaped gabion is the perfect structure to house saplings. Nothing prevents you, however, from planting whatever suits your taste and garden in spheres like this.

Cylindrical gabions, on the other hand, in addition to being used as proper planters, can act as a support for other types of pots or vases, for an even more decorative and unique effect.

Finally, the classic flower bed, made with a border of larger stones and with a less geometrically defined shape always has a particular charm. It is closer to forms found in nature, of course. And it also has the advantage that it can be created wherever you have space available, and in any shape and size you want.

Stones, rocks, pebbles and gravel are, in short, essential natural materials to decorate our gardens in a scenographic and colorful way. The choice of techniques, shapes and sizes is a personal one and is perhaps the most fun part of the creative process. Our main advice is, therefore, to have fun doing your DIY projects.
