Old, plastic garden chairs: With a little creativity you can transform them

Garden furniture made of plastic (or various types of resin) is the most commonly purchased type: they are cheaper, they hold up quite well outdoors and do not require as much maintenance as wood or natural fiber equivalents. Even plastic furniture, however, eventually shows its age - especially if it has been left in the elements for too long.

Among the items that most have outside at home are plastic chairs - which, when they become dirty and rough due to being damaged by the weather, lose a lot of their charm. And they also often have standard shapes that make them somewhat bland and boring. However, if they are still intact, it is possible to restore them with some creative methods and transform them into unique pieces of garden furniture.

The easiest idea is to paint them: clean them thoroughly, dry them off and then place them on some scrap piece of cloth or piece of cardboard and go to work with paint spray cans - the cans are more easy to use than brushes (and give a nicer finish)!

If you want, you can also use painter's masking tape to create stripes and designs, combining multiple colors together.

On a clean chair, repainted in white you could also go wild with a permanent marker and write anything you want on it.

And how about being inspired by some famours artist to choose your decorative motif? Mondrian's elementary shapes and colors, for example, would be very easy to replicate.

Another way to decorate plastic chairs is to cover them using glue and fabric: a sort of découpage that makes the fabric a second skin for the chair.

With the infinite patterns of fabrics available, the chairs will become completely unrecognizable (in a good way).

There are also those who clad them to make them look like a wicker chair!

Reeds (and not only these) could replace a part of the chair, in particular, the backrest.

If you are skilled at sewing, you could create shaped covers for various parts of the chair: if they are also padded, they will also make the chair super comfortable.

And staying with the world of sewing projects, you can make  a cover that will make your outdoor chairs look much more elegant.

Would you like to try to transform your old, plastic chairs?
