Decorating with jute and hemp: 10 ideas you can try

Traditionally, materials such as hemp and jute (collectively also known as "burlap") have always been used as humble tools and fabrics, and they are certainly a far cry from fashionable and more sophisticated design trends and materials. These natural fibers, especially when processed in such a way as to still retain much of their inherent raw and natural charm, have however returned to popularity.

The trend for using furnishing styles that rediscover the beauty of what was usually considered provincial - such as the shabby chic style (and also the various types of antique furniture) - has now become a popular trend, making jute and hemp prominent elements used to achieve this look. Be inspired by the ideas listed below:

Used coffee bags are now easily found online: these are the very ones that roasters discard after having emptied them of their coffee bean content (in order to be roasted and ground). And if you know of any roasters nearby, it is possible that they can set aside a few sacks for you. To do what with, you may ask? Well, you could convert them into upholstery fabrics - especially to cover outdoor furniture.

But you could also take a risk and use them for the restoration (or restyling) of an elegant, classical piece of furniture.

They are also perfect for creating poufs for the outdoors or for creating rustic, grunge or industrial-styled furnishings.

There is also a trend of DIY projects that use jute or hemp rolls, and even coffee bags for curtains to be used at home, especially in the kitchen.

Some have even thought of lining the back of the canvas of a jute sack with fabric, thereby making a double-sided work apron.

Among the simplest DIY projects is the creation of lampshades: if you have left over scraps of hemp or jute fabric, you can cover an old and worn lampshade with it, and make it interesting again.

Depending on the shape of the lampshade, there are many styles you can use to cover it with these fabrics. And if you want, you can also add embossed decorations, such as flowers and more, also made using these natural fibers.

Do you want a wreath to hang on the front door? Whether it's for Christmas or for use at any other time of the year, you can decorate it with jute.

A table runner with a simple and rustic taste: a jute (or hemp) roll is perfect for this.

And you could also decorate it with tassels that hang over at the ends.

Have you ever furnished your home using these materials?
