DIY container beds: 10 ideas for decorating small rooms

If the rooms to be furnished are small in size, it is necessary to manage the space in the most efficient way, exploiting heights and volumes so as not to scatter the furniture between the walls of the room and creating an uncomfortable living environment.

In the bedroom, the most important piece of furniture is certainly the bed, which can become a space-saving piece when you choose to use a so-called container bed: it involves raising the shelf on which to place the bedframe and then the mattress, so as to exploit the space below to store objects, clothes or even create an extra storage environment, as if it were a miniature mezzanine. And it is also possible to achieve these results by cleverly using other furniture, such as in the DIY projects you see below:

The easiest idea to implement is that which involves placing vertical bookcases on the floor, all of the same style of furniture so that they have similar dimensions. Using IKEA models as an example, one of the most used in this way is NORDLI model.

An even more popular choice is the furniture of the KALLAX line, which instead of surrounding the bed base with drawers, leaves the structure open, to be filled as desired with baskets.

An even simpler way is to choose any model of bed structure that is high enough from the ground so that you can slip large drawers with wheels under the bed base, which will act as containers - easy to use.

Staying in the orbit of the Swedish furniture giant, (IKEA) you can easily find examples of container beds - for one or two compartments - made using furniture from the BRIMNES line.

If, on the other hand, you are skilled in carpentry, you can design a series of furniture units with extremely simple lines, so that they all reach the same height on two of the walls (the third may house taller cabinets), and on the shorter of the two, to extend the furniture in order to create a raised platform on which you will set the mattress: it will be a raised bed but perfectly integrated into the furniture.

For this type of project you can also combine purchased furniture and then cover it with a wooden shelf, perhaps even experimenting with using a contrast of materials and colors.

Sturdy metal supports with wooden shelves can become the base of the bed on top of bunk, and you will then need a ladder in the same style to access it. So you can store a compact wardrobe under the bed.

Using only very sturdy and wide bookcases, so that once the width is turned upside down, it actually becomes the height of the platform. This allows you to enter from under the bed on the third side (at the foot) - so as to use the space underneath as you prefer.

For example, it could also house a dog's or cat's kennel.

There is also no shortage of ideas for raised beds that under them have vertical shelves mounted on rails to be pulled in and out comfortably.
