Empty and clean the cabinet

First, empty the furniture of all clothes, also removing them from any containers, which you will move out of the closet together with the hangers. Leave it empty as if you just bought it and put all your clothes on the bed or even on the floor, perhaps placing a blanket on the floor.

At this point divide them into categories, and in so doing make a selection, to decide whether to keep them all or not. There are many criteria for deciding what to keep and what not, the most useful is the one based on the frequency of use: if you have worn them often in the last year, they are for you, otherwise it would be better to consider discarding them unless they have some particular emotional value.

Then divide the garments according to the seasons in which to wear them, in order to keep in evidence those that are needed at the moment. And even within these groups, separate the things to wear every day from those that are rarely needed. If there is enough space, you will move the items that you keep for pure sentimental value but that you do not actually need to the most remote and difficult to reach points. Better still if you put them in tightly closed boxes, to be kept on top of the furniture, under the bed or in some closet (even the garage, for example).

You can also consider the idea of taking advantage of these garments that are no longer worn but still loved to transform them into furnishing objects or to be exhibited. There are those who recycle their favorite T-Shirts into pillow cases, while others frame dresses or some memorable uniform. You can also create patchwork works such as blankets and quilts with t-shirts, even sports ones.

This selection and sorting should be done at the end of each season, so as to free the wardrobe from garments that have never been worn in the last three or four months, and always have the clothes suitable for the current season at hand.

Among the things you want to get rid of, divide those that are now ruined and unusable from those that can be donated or sold. The former, however, could give life to many creative recycling projects, especially in the case of jeans and T-shirts, but also shirts and sweaters can find many different uses at home.

It is difficult to part with garments in good condition, but if we have really never worn them in the last year and indeed we had even forgotten to have them or maybe they no longer come in due to a change in weight, it is better to donate them rather than wait for them to go. good again.

Once the sorting of clothes is finished, it is time to clean and freshen the inside of the wardrobe. Start by vacuuming or dusting every surface thoroughly, and then continue with the gentle washing of the surfaces. Keeping a clean and disinfected cabinet is also an excellent measure against the appearance of moths.

You can use:

  • Vinegar. Vinegar degreases and eliminates bad odors, as well as being an excellent remedy in case of humidity. Then fill a basin with hot water and dilute 1 cup of white vinegar (wine, apple or alcohol), then immerse and squeeze a soft cloth well to pass into the wardrobe. Also have a basin of hot water ready to rinse immediately with another clean cloth and also a third cloth or soft cloth to dry immediately. If you want, add a few drops of essential oil of your choice. Avoid vinegar in the case of wood with a glossy or laminated finish.
  • Bicarbonate: dissolve two tablespoons of bicarbonate in a liter of hot water, and then use it in a basin by soaking a cloth or use a spray bottle. Again you can use essential oil to give a pleasant aroma.
  • Marseille soap: When you are afraid that other methods will ruin the finish of the materials, use Marseille soap. Just dissolve a handful in a basin of hot water and then wash as in the other cases.

And if you want to modernize the look of the piece of furniture, perhaps repainting it, now is the time.

Organize your clothes
Depending on the sorting you just made, go back to filling the cupboard. Start with the clothes to hang, perhaps even using the tricks to hang multiple hangers together or to use the hangers for scarves, bras and the like.

Remember to arrange everything so that you can find the clothes more easily. according to the season, the use, the type of garment. Also separate your work clothes from those for your free time: every morning and at every particular occasion you will know where to look and what to choose.

A few useful tips to make the best use of the space in the closet:

  • Use vertical dividers to keep the stacks of jerseys and sweaters separate on the various shelves. Plastic crates used for transporting milk, or compact wooden baskets or crates are also perfect for organizing the closet, although it is always better to prefer containers that have lids.
  • Add a lightweight, even plastic chain to a hanger to hang other hangers together as well. If hanging garments are light, you can also use can tabs
  • With the plastic hooks of the bathroom curtains, on the other hand, you can transform a hanger into a scarf holder
  • Crutches for ties and scarves can also come in handy for light sleeveless dresses and tank tops
  • Elastics on the crutch ends help the clothes not slip down creating a messy lump in the back of the closet
  • Prefer plastic or wooden crutches; metal ones can easily rust or deform clothes.
  • Roll up the T Shirts to keep them tidy, make room in the drawers and instantly recognize what you are looking for
  • Use cardboard boxes to make convenient drawer dividers
  • In order not to spoil the shape of the boots, you have many options: rolled up magazines, empty plastic bottles or even floating pool tubes.
  • If you then want to avoid a change of season every few months, or if the wardrobe is shared by several people, you can use tags that easily attach to the wardrobe rod to divide the clothes
  • You can also help yourself to divide the clothes by using hangers of different colors or patterns
  • If there is space, add another rod to hang other clothes
  • Place the items you use less frequently and the items that do not need to hang in the plastic containers.
  • Even the shoes will be divided according to the frequency of use and the suitable occasion to wear them, and if there is space in the cabinet, divide them with shoe racks to hang (at the clothes rod or inside the door), or your own with small shoe racks to be inserted in the wardrobe compartment.

If you want to perfume the wardrobe and the clothes inside it, you can resort to various do-it-yourself remedies.

  • Scented bags: you can insert dried flowers, petals or leaves of aromatic herbs into bags of light cotton, linen or gauze. Think lavender, rose petals, mint or lemon balm leaves and more. If you want, you can also pour in a few drops of essential oil that matches their scent, and leave them in the various parts of the cabinet or drawer now clean.
  • Citrus peels dried and reduced into small pieces with which to fill bags or bowls, in which you can also insert spices (cinnamon or star anise, for example) or a few drops of essential oil.
  • Chalks: Mix two parts of plaster cast with one part of water to form a paste, adding 5 drops (or more, if you like) of an essential oil of your choice. With this preparation fill a tray for ice cubes (or some similar mold, perhaps for pastry such as those for chocolates). Let it dry completely and then use the chalks inside containers or bags to insert into the furniture.
  • Even a tub of baking soda can absorb odors, and you can add essential oil to it. An ideal essence for a fresh scent that also has excellent antibacterial properties is that of tea tree.

Sometimes boxes are also kept in the wardrobes with many other objects other than clothing or shoes: photographs and various memories, which will also be screened to decide whether to keep them, how to possibly rearrange them or perhaps use them for some decoration.

Get rid of any magazines or objects without any sentimental value, so as to reduce the boxes that will take up less space. And if the cabinet is already full, you can find other spaces for these objects, such as in plastic boxes (of good quality), to be kept on top of the furniture or in some closet. Label each box to indicate the contents.

If by chance there are pieces of household linen, consider moving them to the dedicated closet, so as not to have sheets and towels scattered throughout the house.

After such an operation, your wardrobe will certainly be much more tidy, fragrant and pleasant.
